Jakob Swetland a graduate of California State University Fullerton with a Bachelor's degree in Choral Music Education and a Minor in African American Studies ('23), embarked on his musical journey at Orange Coast College, where he earned his AA degree in music. During his tenure at OCC, Jakob served as the student director of the renowned Orange Coast College Chamber Singers and the Orange Coast College Chorale, honing his skills and leadership abilities. His dedication and talent have afforded him remarkable opportunities, performing in choirs alongside luminaries such as Andrea Bocelli, Sutton Foster, and Bernadette Peters, under the batons of esteemed conductors including John Williams, Gustavo Dudamel, and Sarah Hicks. Jakob's scholarly pursuits have delved into various musical realms, from analyzing Bach's Ich Hatte viel Bekümmernis (BWV 21) to exploring the performance practice of African American Spirituals. Balancing his studies with teaching and conducting, he aspires to broaden his expertise by pursuing a Masters in Music Education, with an ultimate goal of attaining a Doctorate Degree to inspire future generations of Choral Educators at the collegiate level. Currently, Jakob serves as the Director for the Cantate Community Choir of University Hills, Irvine, and has recently assumed the role of Director of Music Ministries at Orange Coast Unitarian Universalist Church in Costa Mesa, CA. Under the tutelage of mentors such as Nadia Smelser, Brian Farrell, Eliza Rubenstein, Dr. Christopher Peterson, and Dr. Robert Istad, Jakob has cultivated his vocal and conducting prowess. Beyond his musical pursuits, Jakob enjoys savoring coffee, exploring new destinations with his mom, and cherishing moments with his beloved dog, Penny. His commitment to excellence in musicianship and choral conducting was recognized with the prestigious 2017 Walt Gleckler Memorial Scholarship at Orange Coast College. Currently, Jakob contributes his talents as a volunteer singer with the acclaimed Pacific Chorale.
